Region 5 Tours Alameda County Water District & San Francisco PUC Facilities
Last week, Region 5 hosted its spring 2012 networking reception and tour out of Fremont. Hanson Bridgett was very generous to host our networking reception at the Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley on Sunday, June 3. Allison Schutte, with Hanson Bridgett, gave a very interesting presentation on the controversy regarding restoring the Hetch Hetchy Valley to its pre-dam condition, which engaged the entire room in great conversation and questions.
On Monday, June 4, everyone met at Alameda County Water District headquarters for breakfast and a pre-tour briefing by ACWD’s General Manager Walt Wadlow. We all braved the June rain that day and headed out on the tour to see ACWD’s rubber inflatable dams, quarries and fish screens.
We went to see the historic Sunol Water Temple before stopping at the Sunol Water Treatment Plant for lunch. After eating everyone had the opportunity to see the facility’s seismic and water quality upgrade systems under construction.
The tour concluded at the New Irvington Tunnel and Alameda West Portal Construction site. We learned how the tunnel is being excavated using conventional mining methods, including road headers and controlled detonation. Everyone really enjoyed being able to see the giant tunnel opening up close.
The day was an outstanding success due in large part to the great coordinating efforts and sponsorships from Alameda County Water District and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Check out some of the worthwhile information we learned on this tour here.
