Reporting to East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Manager of Environmental Compliance, the Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist provides lead direction to project staff, technicians and consultants; develops, implements and evaluates projects and studies designed to ensure compliance with environmental regulations; and assists in developing proactive solutions to environmental issues and regulatory requirements

Typical duties of the position include:
• Assessing water and wastewater treatment processes, effluent, sludge and emissions; evaluating and making recommendations on remedial measures to ensure compliance with regulations governing air, water and wastewater quality
• Managing the assessment and remediation of chemicals impacting soil, groundwater, surface water or air, and negotiating with regulatory agencies on EBMUD’s behalf
• Preparing and reviewing a wide variety of technical studies and reports to meet EBMUD and regulatory agency requirements, and representing EBMUD to regulatory agencies and public and private organizations

The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental compliance investigation and reporting, and enforcement of regulations which involve the review of water, wastewater or air pollution control processes.

Requires a bachelor’s degree with major work in environmental science, industrial hygiene, safety engineering, chemistry, biology, toxicology, engineering or a closely related field; AND either: two (2) years of experience equivalent to Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II; OR, four (4) years of experience in environmental compliance investigation and reporting, or enforcement of regulations which involve the review of water, wastewater or air pollution control processes. Experience may require demonstrated expertise or specialization relevant to the position vacancy.

The salary range is $9,015 per month increasing to $9,466, $9,939, $10,436 and $10,958 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.
