NGWA Focus Conference on Midwestern Groundwater Issues
Agricultural chemicals, increased nutrient loads from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and road salt are commonly associated with groundwater issues in the Midwest. In recent years, much of the upper Midwest has succumbed to major seasonal flooding events that can impact groundwater and wells, and climate change projections suggest these events will occur in this region with increasing frequency. Over the past decade, equally significant groundwater issues have surfaced related to oil and shale gas production, and increased water use for irrigation, biofuels development, and other energy alternatives. While the challenges continue, so does the potential technological solutions for prediction, prevention, mitigation, and treatment on a regional and national scale.
