Task Force to Propose Conservation Measures for Commercial and Industrial Water Users

The Department of Water Resources and the Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Task Force are releasing alternative water conservation measures to reduce urban demand. The proposed alternative "best management practices" (BMPs) are intended to guide water users in how to operate more efficiently in order to better conserve water.

The proposed alternatives are listed in a draft report to the Legislature that will be presented to the public during a workshop Jan. 12 in Sacramento. The public will be given the opportunity to ask questions and provide comment. The report will be available for review here on Jan. 6.

Legislation enacted as part of the 2009 comprehensive water package directed DWR and the California Urban Water Conservation Council to convene a task force of representatives from commercial, industrial, and institutional (CII) water users, environmental stakeholders and urban water suppliers to develop alternative BMPs for CII water users.

The task force was also required to assess the potential statewide water use efficiency improvements in CII sectors that would result from implementation of the proposed alternative BMPs. That assessment will be detailed in the draft report.
