ACWA Issues Statement on Research Linking Decline in Delta Fish with Nutrient Pollution

Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on a new study linking declines in Delta fish populations with nutrient loads in the Bay-Delta. The study released by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science found a strong correlation between effluent changes at a major wastewater treatment plant and declines in Delta smelt and other fish.

“This research underscores what ACWA and many others have been saying about the critical need for a multi-species, multi-stressor approach to addressing the Delta crisis. It is clear that a more comprehensive approach is the only way to move in the direction of achieving the co-equal goals of improved ecosystem health and improved water supply reliability. This study should help us begin to get our arms around the complex factors affecting the Delta as part of a comprehensive, sustained effort."
