Delta Stewardship Council Merger Proposal Dropped

Gov. Jerry Brown has agreed to withdraw a proposal to fold the Delta Stewardship Council into the California Natural Resources Agency, according to testimony today by Resources Secretary John Laird.

Laird, testifying at a hearing of the Assembly Special Committee on the Governor’s Reorganization Plan, said the action was consistent with the Little Hoover Commission recent recommendation that the Legislature adopt the governor’s plan to replace five agencies with three and fold several boards and commissions into others, provided the Delta Stewardship Council be allowed to retain its independence.

Laird said the administration has agreed to rewrite the governor’s reorganization plan without the Council merger proposal. Other proposals in the plan include moving CalRecycle from Resources to the state’s Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Boating and Waterways into Resources.
