Senate Confirms Delta Council Appointments

The state Senate confirmed four appointees to the Delta Stewardship Council on the final day of the legislative session.

The council is charged with creating a plan to address water supply issues and ensure conservation of the Delta’s troubled ecosystem. It was established as part of the comprehensive water package enacted by the Legislature in November 2009.

On a 37-0 vote, the Senate confirmed former ACWA President Randy Fiorini, retired biotechnology executive Hank Nordhoff and environmentalist Felicia Marcus as members of the council. It also confirmed Phil Isenberg as chair of the council in a separate 28-1 vote.

In addition, the Senate confirmed seven appointments to the California Water Commission, the entity that will be responsible for allocating $3 billion in funding for statewide water system operational improvements under the 2012 water bond.

Confirmed appointees include Daniel Curtin, director of the California Conference of Carpenters; Joe Del Bosque, president of a diversified farm in the San Joaquin Valley; Kimberly Delfino, program director for Defenders of Wildlife; Luther Hintz, former general manager of Reclamation District 108; and Anthony Saracino, director of the California Water Program at The Nature Conservancy.

Two other commission appointments, including ACWA President Paul Kelley and state Sen. Dave Cogdill, take effect in 2011 and have not been taken up by the Senate.

The Senate also confirmed the appointment of Sen. Lois Wolk to the Delta Conservancy and reconfirmed Charlie Hoppin as chair of the State Water Resources Control Board.
