Senate Energy & Water Subcommittee Marks DOE, Corps, Reclamation Appropriations

Yesterday, July 20, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy & Water Development marked up their version of the appropriations bill funding the Department of Energy (DOE), the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Bureau of Reclamation.

The subcommittee, chaired by Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) approved the $34.9 billion spending bill with no amendments. While no amendments were offered at the subcommittee level, a number of Senators did express their wish to bring up funding requests zeroed out by the Obama Administration at the full committee level, including a request by Senator Murray (D-Wash.). She said she was “disappointed in the lack of funding for Yucca Mountain [the nuclear waste repository].”

The Subcommittee approved $5.3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers. The Subcommittee added back $416 million in funding for the Corps cut by the Obama Administration’s request. The subcommittee also approved $1.1 billion for the Bureau of Reclamation, $25 million more than the President's request.

The full Appropriations Committee is expected to mark up the legislation Thursday, July 22.
