#01 Volume Combo DVD – Single DVD of segments 1-8
Combination DVD includes the following segments.
#01 Climate Change on climate change and its potential impacts on our water supply system. The segment takes viewers high into the Sierra for a first-hand look at the snow pack and how climate change may affect its important role as a natural water reservoir. It also traces the journey our melting snow takes from the mountains to rivers and streams, and ultimately into man-made reservoirs such as Folsom Lake as part of our elaborate water supply system.
#02 Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta focuses on the Delta and the aging levees that protect farmland, communities and critical infrastructure. The segment takes viewers on a boat tour of the Delta for a close look at this unique and vulnerable landscape, a discussion of its history and what it all means to California.
#03 Flood Flight 2006 with reservoirs brimming and a massive snow pack waiting in the wings, flood managers went on high alert in April 2006 as a series of late-season storms pummeled Northern and Central California. This segment takes a look at some of the efforts to hold floodwaters at bay and to protect lives, homes and property from destructive floods.
#04 Storing Water focuses on surface water reservoirs and the multiple roles these man-made structures play in providing flood control, hydroelectricity, water supply, water quality improvements, and other benefits. The segment takes viewers to Shasta Dam, the state’s largest reservoir, and looks at newer storage projects that are helping to improve water quality and meet environmental needs.
#05 What's New on the Colorado River looks at the canals and aqueducts that bring Colorado River water to Southern California and the many efforts under way to use water as efficiently as possible. Viewers will get a close look at projects to line an earthen canal with concrete, and learn about a 50-year program to improve habitat and protect species along the Colorado River.
#06 Using Water Wisely takes an on-the-ground look at what water agencies are doing to encourage wise water use at homes, parks and businesses. From high-tech irrigation controllers to household appliances and fixtures to low-tech, low-cost, water-saving practices, the segment highlights some of the many efforts that are allowing California to meet the needs of growing communities without increasing the amount of water consumed.
#07 We All Live in a Watershed focuses on watersheds and their importance to our environment, our economy and our well-being. Viewers will visit a key California watershed to learn how water moves starting from the highest point, the mountains then like fingers on a hand, to springs, streams, rivers then out to sea.
#08 Desalting Water focuses on ocean desalination and the potential role it may play in the state’s water portfolio. Viewers will tour a desalination plant to understand how removing salt from seawater is increasingly seen as a viable way to “drought-proof” communities and reduce their dependence on imported water. Projects also are under way to desalt brackish groundwater.
ACWA is only authorized to sell copies to its public water agency members for their educational efforts. Members of the general public may purchase copies of the segments by going to Huell Howser's Web site www.calgold.com
