The Alameda County Water District located in Fremont, CA is seeking to hire a Construction Inspector I/II position. Under direction of the Development Services Manager, the Construction Inspector I/II acts as the District’s representative in monitoring and overseeing the activities of contractors performing work on construction projects. Strong technical knowledge and excellent customer service skills are needed to perform field inspections of water utility-related construction work in progress to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and accepted construction methods.
The Construction Inspector will perform basic drafting and mapping, assist in reviewing plans covering all discipline areas, e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, etc., performs basic construction-related surveying, conducts water quality sampling, performs basic engineering calculations and computer data entry, keeps a variety of records and logs, performs quantity take-offs, monitors project status, reads and understands plans and specifications covering all disciplines, e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, etc., prepares customer job orders, and prepares a variety of schedules, notices, procedures and reports.

Education and Experience – Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be the equivalent of: Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and:

Construction Inspector I: Three (3) years of full time experience in a construction trade or as an engineering technician.

Construction Inspector II: Three (3) years of full-time experience equivalent to the District’s classification of Construction Inspector I.

Additional Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Construction Inspector I: Must obtain a Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification within 12 months of employment. Failure to obtain a Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification within 12 months will result in termination of employment.

Construction Inspector II: Possession of a Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator Certification is required.

Knowledge of: the methods, materials, equipment and tests used in the construction and installation of pipelines and structures; mechanical and electrical systems; water distribution and transmission systems and facilities; proper inspection techniques to examine construction workmanship and materials for defects and faults; materials sampling, testing and estimating procedures; surveying principles and methods as applied to construction work; basic principles of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; use of Global Position Systems (GPS) equipment; relevant OSHA regulations and principles and practices of work safety; factors affecting water quality in a water distribution system; basic water quality sampling techniques and testing methodologies; and both English and metric measuring systems.
