Under the general direction of the Director, the Public Affairs and Communications Manager plans and coordinates media information, public education, community outreach publications, and establishes ties with local, state and federal government officials, NGOs, chambers of commerce and homeowners associations. Two Public Affairs Associates, who report directly to the manager, assist in executing day-to-day activities to implement these programs. The successful candidate possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, a sound problem-solving ability, and a solid leadership quality that are key to ensuring effective interaction with community leaders, elected officials, other agencies, the media, customers and District staff. Maintaining poise in difficult situations, demonstrating a commitment to resolve issues in an objective manner, and making consistent, timely decisions are essential behavioral attributes. The candidate must be able to mentor employees and foster a cooperative, team-oriented workplace. A management style that leads by example, guided by integrity and respect, is vital to success in this position. Candidates should possess five or more years of increasingly responsible experience performing professional tasks in the development and implementation of public information and community outreach programs with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, communications, journalism, public administration or a closely related field is required.
