The City of San Luis Obispo, California is seeking applicants for the department head position of Utilities Director. The director will lead the robust Utilities Department, recently recognized as a Utility of the Future by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, to provide complete municipal water and wastewater services to the Central Coast community of 45,000 people, that nearly doubles in population during daytime hours. The Utilities Department with staff of 73, also administers the solid waste franchise, and partners with other departments in the citywide stormwater and climate action programs, as well as other city-wide initiatives.

The ideal candidate is forward-thinking and possesses the skills, abilities, and passion to navigate these major upcoming priorities:

  • $140+M Water Resource Recovery Facility Project bid award and construction
  • Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Groundwater Sustainability Agency activities
  • Maximize use of recycled water including areas outside of the City
  • Water Treatment Plant Energy Efficiency Project
  • Renegotiation of the City’s Water Resource Recovery Facility NPDES Permit
  • Balancing regulatory requirements, rate adjustments, and CIP needs
  • Manage expansion of infrastructure for a growing community with multiple major housing developments underway in the City
  • Updating the department’s existing long-range Strategic Plan
  • Expanding workforce reliability and knowledge transfer for a department that has experienced and will continue to see considerable impacts from retirements.
