As the drought continues in California, urban and agriculture water agencies are responding with conservation goals, water efficiency programs, long-term resiliency planning and other steps. The below summaries highlight some of the responses by local water purveyors across the state. ACWA member agencies can continue to submit their information using the below button.

Note: The District was only able to deliver water to landowners for one week in April. The District filed for an emergency petition to be able to deliver wholesale water to the City of Montague via an emergency pipeline that was completed during the 2014 drought. The emergency petition was granted in June 2021 and will end on December 31, 2021.

Turlock Irrigation District

Mandatory Water Use Reductions to growers (27 inches in 2022 compared to 42 inches in 2020), declared water shortage

Long-term drought resiliency planning includes:

  • Surface water storage – after the 2012-2015 drought, TID built Lateral 8 Regulating Reservoir which supports water conservation by storing 130 acre-feet of water resulting in 9,000 AF average annual savings and a 90 percent reduction in groundwater pumping within the project area. The district is planning two additional reservoirs over the next two years.
  • Customer education programs
  • Online Tools: TID has created a series of online tools that help growers better manage and plan their irrigation operations for more efficient use. TID is also piloting a Drought Transfer Program that allows farmers to transfer a specific amount of available water to another grower based on the severity of the dry water years.
