Melissa Trinidad Barbosa, PE, Senior Water System Engineer, Azusa Light & Water

1. Describe your job.

Azusa Light & Water (ALW) serves more than 110,000 customers in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. Within our service area we have a treatment plant (12 million gallons per day), 13 reservoirs, nine booster pump stations, 13 ground water wells, two imported water connections and 281 miles of pipelines. I manage the Water Engineering Division. Every day is different, but I get to lead, plan, coordinate and execute a variety of advanced level professional management duties and complex technical engineering responsibilities. These involve the planning, design, procurement and research of various water technologies and water infrastructure to support ALW.

2. What do you like best about your job?

I love that I get to work in the city where I grew up. It’s very rewarding to see a project start from conception and then actually get to see it built and utilized in a positive way by the community. My favorite part is to plan and administer the Water Division capital improvement program, engineering work, plans and specifications for water infrastructure and construction management.

3. How did you get into the water industry?

Water is just awesome – a precious resource! I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a civil engineering degree. After I graduated, I started in the private sector working in the Inland Empire on projects for multiple water districts creating hydraulic modeling networks, master water plans and reservoir designs. An opportunity came up to work in the city I grew up in, and I’ve embraced it for the last seven years.

4. What is something unique about yourself?

I’m always on the go and volunteer for the Azusa Kids Come First golf tournament, K-12 outreach, and I love skiing and kayaking. I am an active member with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and serve on the Board as the Past-President for the San Bernardino-Riverside Branch ASCE. I really enjoy volunteering in the community, and K-12 public outreach raising awareness, encouraging and inspiring our youth about the civil engineering field. My favorite board game is Settlers of Catan!

5. What is your favorite sports team?

I love cheering for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish! I try to attend at least two games a year: one game in South Bend at Notre Dame and one in California. The atmosphere is amazing. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming at Notre Dame. I definitely recommend everyone visit the campus at least once.
