Anthony Lopez, Facilities Supervisor, Yolo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District

Telling the stories of the people who work to deliver California’s water…

1.) Describe your job.

I’m the Facilities Supervisor. I oversee, coordinate, and perform the inspections, repairs, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of the water district’s two impounding dams, one diversion dam and 67 units of transportation/construction equipment.

2.) What do you like best about your job?

It’s something new every day. The job will take me from troubleshooting a complicated hydraulic/ electrical circuit issue in our hydro facility, to the project management of a large civil project, then on to dealing with state and federal regulators.

3.) How did you get into the water industry?

I’ve been immersed in agriculture my entire life. My family has been in the cattle industry long before I was born and I received my work ethic as a young boy through long days of hard work and no pay. My mechanical aptitude came from my father. I quite literally got my first real job at a tractor dealership based solely on his name and reputation. At 46 years old, I still call on him for mechanical consultations. After three years at the dealership, the general manager at the time here at YCFCWCD asked me to take the shop supervisor position

4.) What is something unique about yourself?

I take pre/post war tractors and industrial machinery destined for the scrap heap and bring them back to working condition. I wouldn’t characterize it as a hobby…more of a sickness or an affliction.

5.) What is your favorite hobby?

Anything and everything outdoors. I hunt, fish, abalone dive, kayak, hike and camp. There’s nothing better than sitting around a campfire after a fun-filled day with family and good friends sipping on cool refreshments.
