MWDOC Offers Stem-based Merit Badge Clinics for OC Scouts by Municipal Water District of Orange County Sep 18, 2023 Member Submitted News The Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) recently provided the first of three engaging STEM-based clinics where 62 OC Scouts BSA earned their Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badge. Through interactive activities and a guided tour, these clinics present an invaluable opportunity to educate Orange County’s youngest water users on the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources. MWDOC firmly believes in the power of practical, hands-on learning experiences. As such, the Scouts were taken through six unique activities that covered topics like soil erosion, soil conservation, water pollution, the water cycle, and more. Each activity challenged the Scouts to identify how their actions can impact the local environment. This hands-on approach reinforced learned concepts and instilled a sense of responsibility, encouraging Scouts to take action in their community. One of the highlights of the clinic was a tour of the Santa Margarita Water District’s Chiquita Water Reclamation Plant. Here, the Scouts saw firsthand how wastewater is treated and used as recycled irrigation water. After the four-hour clinic, Scouts shared their newfound understanding of the importance of healthy soil and what it takes to have a clean, safe, and reliable water supply. MWDOC is committed to providing Orange County students with essential water education and empowering them to make informed decisions that impact our future water supply.
