MWDOC Sponsors OC Children’s Book Festival to Promote Environmental Literacy by Municipal Water District of Orange County Nov 21, 2023 Member Submitted News In October, the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) sponsored and participated in the 2023 annual Orange County Children’s Book Festival to highlight the importance of water education and the role water plays in our daily lives. Hosted at Orange Coast Community College, the festival attracted over 7,000 families featuring distinguished authors, booths, and special guest speakers, including Jesús Trejo, an actor and comedian who authored Papá’s Magical Water-Jug Clock, a children’s book detailing the power of water! Positioned in the STEM wing, MWDOC provided practical resources for families such as a water education book list, self-guided grab-and-go water activities, school program opportunities, and shared the Department of Water Resources’ tribal stories on the origins of water. Attendees also engaged with MWDOC’s water education mascot, Ricky the Rambunctious RaindropSM, and received educational activity booklets, teaching the next generation good water stewardship. The dynamic booklets featured sections on water footprint, the water cycle, pollution prevention, water filtration, and more! Connecting children to their local environment develops a sense of responsibility for protecting our water resources. Through thoughtful conversation and engaging water-centric activities that empower kids to consider their relationship to the natural world, attendees learned how to take responsibility for their water consumption and make sustainable water-wise choices in their daily lives.
