West Basin Hires New Manager of Engineering by West Basin Municipal Water District Aug 11, 2020 Member Submitted News West Basin has announced the hiring of Wendell Johnson, a professional engineer with more than 20 years of experience, to manage the District’s engineering department. Johnson is a California registered civil engineer, with extensive experience in managing capital improvement programs and public works departments. He previously served as the Director of Public Works at both the city of Compton and the city of Lomita. At Lomita, a city within the West Basin service area, he acted as the General Manager of the Water Department. “Wendell brings a wealth of valuable experience and skills to our team,” said West Basin General Manager, Patrick Sheilds. Johnson’s experience includes project, construction and contract management, labor contract negotiations, service contracts, inter-agency agreements, and operations and maintenance budgeting. Wendell obtained his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He made the move to California to work in the oil/ gas industry, before embarking on a career in public service. Johnson is the first African American to serve as manager of the West Basin engineering department.
