SSWD Hosts “Thirst Aid for Trees” to Promote Healthy Urban Trees by Sacramento Suburban Water District Aug 10, 2026 Member Submitted News More than 50 community members attended Sacramento Suburban Water District’s (SSWD) “Thirst Aid for Trees” event on July 24, where they received practical guidance on helping newly planted trees thrive during the hottest part of the year. Held at the Garden on Eden demonstration garden in Carmichael, the free event brought together tree care experts, water conservation specialists, and local partners to demonstrate proper tree watering techniques and answer questions about maintaining healthy landscapes while using water efficiently. One of the event’s highlights was a live demonstration by Master Gardener Cheryl Buckwalter of Landscape Liaisons, who showed attendees how to properly plant a young tree and use a simple five-gallon watering bucket to deliver slow, deep watering. Throughout the demonstration, Buckwalter answered questions from attendees about tree care, watering frequency, and establishing healthy root systems. “Trees provide shade, beauty, and long-term value to a property, but many homeowners may not be familiar with how to water them properly,” said Greg Bundesen, SSWD’s Conservation and Communications Supervisor. “Simple techniques like slow, deep watering can make a significant difference in helping trees remain healthy and resilient through Sacramento’s hot, dry summers.” Representatives from the Sacramento Tree Foundation joined SSWD staff throughout the event, answering questions about selecting, planting, and caring for trees. Visitors also learned about weather-based sprinkler timers, available water conservation rebates, and other programs designed to help customers maintain attractive landscapes while using water wisely. Each household received a complimentary pre-drilled tree-watering bucket, water-saving devices, and educational materials to help put the techniques demonstrated during the event into practice at home. Attendees also explored SSWD’s Garden on Eden demonstration garden, where they saw examples of water-wise landscaping and learned how groundwater wells help provide reliable water service throughout the community. The event attracted coverage from both KCRA 3 and CBS13, helping extend the message about proper tree care and water-efficient landscaping to a broader regional audience.
