Treatment Plant Upgrades Ensure Safety and Efficiency by Contra Costa Water District Sep 4, 2024 Member Submitted News Starting this fall, with completion expected the following winter, Contra Costa Water District is upgrading the disinfection system at the Randall-Bold Water Treatment Plant in Oakley. This upgrade enhances safety for our employees and the community surrounding our plant and maintains our high standards for water quality. Currently, the disinfection system includes chlorine gas and aqueous ammonia—chemicals effective in killing bacteria and other water-borne pathogens, but hazardous if an accidental release were to occur. Later this year, we’ll begin a project to replace those chemicals with safer alternatives—sodium hypochlorite and liquid ammonium sulfate. This switch not only simplifies handling but also aligns with our goal to use safer chemical alternatives when possible across all our facilities. These upgrades are part of our ongoing commitment to reinvest in our infrastructure, ensuring it meets current safety standards and community needs. By updating how we treat water at Randall-Bold, we continue to provide reliable, clean water to our community, while enhancing safety and reducing environmental risks.
