Description

Under the general supervision (Accountant I) or direction (Accountant II) of an Accounting Supervisor, this position plays a key role in supporting the organization’s financial integrity and operations. The Accountant performs a wide range of professional accounting functions, including cash and investment management, financial reporting, fixed assets, general ledger and job costing, year-end close, and payroll administration.

This role prepares and analyzes detailed financial schedules, statistical data, and accounting reports for management and other stakeholders, helping drive informed decision-making. Depending on assignment, the position may also provide technical and functional guidance to accounting support staff.

There is currently one vacancy for this position. The recruitment is being conducted for both classifications. The vacancy will be filled at one of the two classifications, not both.

The district participates in both an Alternative Work Schedule and Hybrid Work from Home Program.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and collaborative, with opportunities to contribute to process improvements and gain exposure across multiple areas of accounting. The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Have strong background in the payroll process, including ensuring timely and accurate posting and maintenance of payroll related data; reviewing source documents for validity and accuracy of payroll changes; submitting payroll tax deposits and pensionable wages to the state pension system; and preparing external payroll reports and tax returns (e.g. quarterly payroll tax returns, Form W-2s, State Controller’s compensation report, etc.).
  • Have experience ensuring ongoing federal and state regulatory compliance along with agency policies, procedures, various bargaining units’ Memorandum of Understandings and implementation of technical tax law and accounting principles and procedures.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide technical information and instruction to District employees regarding procedures and methods involved in entering payroll data into the system; and interpret and explain rules and regulations involving payroll.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting to prepare journal entries for payroll adjustments and year-end accrual entries.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform reconciliations, research discrepancies and identify solutions.
  • Ability to produce schedules for the annual audit and disclosures for the annual comprehensive financial report.
  • Demonstrate understanding of or willingness to learn other accounting processes, such as cash management and capital assets, to provide staff coverage for backup purposes.
  • Be a collaborative team player who can also work independently with minimal direction.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.

REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be the equivalent of:

Education

  • Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.

Experience

  • Accountant I: No work experience is required. Some experience in financial record keeping or professional accounting tasks is desirable.
  • Accountant II: Two (2) years of full-time experience equivalent to that of an Accountant I within the district.

Salary

  • Accountant I: $52.471-$63.778 Hourly
  • Accountant II: $58.301-$70.866 Hourly

Candidates passing the qualifications appraisal process will be ranked on an employment list for further consideration. Top-ranking candidates will be invited to a personal interview with the hiring Supervisor.
