Request to Veto AB 249 (Holden) Sep 21, 2023 Comment Letters To: The Honorable Gavin Newsom Subject: AB 249 (Holden) – REQUEST FOR VETO Letter excerpt: The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) respectfully requests that you veto AB 249 (Holden) regarding the testing for lead in drinking water at schools. For our member public water agencies that serve drinking water, public health protection is a top priority. Community water systems (CWSs) have already conducted testing for lead at schools pursuant to the enactment of AB 746 (Gonzalez Fletcher), which went into effect on January 1, 2018. AB 249 would require a CWS that serves a public school that receives Title I funding, with a building constructed before January 1, 2010, to conduct additional testing for lead in each of the school’s potable water system outlets (e.g., water fountain or faucet) on or before January 1, 2027.
