WASHINGTON D.C. – The Bureau of Reclamation on Jan. 5 announced a $7 million investment from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 82 small-scale water efficiency projects across 14 western states. In California, grant recipients included 17 ACWA member agencies that will be able to apply the federal funding toward total project costs.

The grants will support local community projects, including measuring water flow, automating water delivery, or lining canals. The funding is part of $1 billion provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the innovative WaterSMART program, which supports states, tribes and local entities as they plan for and implement actions to increase water supply through investments to modernize existing infrastructure and avoid potential water conflicts.

“Community-driven projects are at the heart of WaterSMART, and small investments can go a long way to support water supply and reliability,” Bureau Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton stated in a news release.  “These water efficiency improvements are small, but when combined throughout the West, the projects play an important role in communities becoming more resilient to drought.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocates $8.3 billion for Bureau water infrastructure projects over the next five years to advance drought resilience and expand access to clean water for families, farmers and wildlife. The investment will repair aging water delivery systems, secure dams, complete rural water projects, and protect aquatic ecosystems.
