The San Diego County Water Authority has announced it will host seven free “Landscape Design for Homeowners” Workshops in the San Diego region in October.

The workshops will be led by local landscaping professionals and are part of SDCWA’s award-winning WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program.

During the three-hour workshops, participants will learn the basic principles of a WaterSmart landscape, including soil amendments, landscape design, turf removal, plant selection, planning, irrigation and rainwater catchment. According to SDCWA, WaterSmart landscapes can reduce a homeowner’s long-term water consumption by one third.

The following workshops are scheduled:

  • Oct 14 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in Escondido
  • Oct. 16 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in Clariemonet
  • Oct. 17 from 2-5 p.m. in Escondido
  • Oct. 20 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Rancho Bernardo
  • Oct. 21 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in El Cajon
  • Oct. 24 from 6-9 p.m. in Santee
  • Oct. 28 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Vista

A step-by-step guide to the WaterSmart landscape retrofit process also is available online at: landscapemakeover.watersmartsd.org/elearning.
