U.S. House, Senate Passes $1.7 Trillion Omnibus Appropriations Package by ACWA Staff Dec 23, 2022 Water News WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Dec. 23 the House approved an omnibus appropriations package to fund the government at roughly $1.7 trillion through FY 2023. The package passed the House 225 – 201; passing the Senate earlier in the week 68 – 29. The bill now heads to President Joe Biden for his signature. The FY23 omnibus includes many provisions to fund agencies and programs throughout the federal government including nearly $15 billion for the Department of Interior; more than $10 billion for the Environmental Protection Agency; roughly $9 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works; and nearly $4 billion for the Forest Service. Additionally, the package funds several community-based projects for California water. The package also provides support for several ACWA priorities including more than $4 billion across several agencies for wildfire suppression and fuels management; nearly $300 million across several agencies for addressing PFAS contamination and testing; as well as funding for Western drought programs and aging infrastructure. The FY23 omnibus follows a robust year of federal funding from Congress. In tandem with funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and the Water Resources Development Act of 2022, the FY23 omnibus provides further opportunities for supporting California water needs. The full text of the package, as well as section summaries and explanations, can be viewed on the Senate Appropriations Committee website.
